facebook hacked? What's with all this spam?

There has been a recent flood of spam on facebook and I can't understand why people are not making a bigger deal of it. Isn't this the equivalent of facebook being hacked?

Consider all the personal and private data you may have on facebook. If some has the ability to spam people you are friends with from your account should there not be an uprising of concerned facebook members?

If someone can hack into your account and take control how can we ever trust facebook to hold and manage our information?

How to get a free Facebook Fan Gate

Facebook Fan Gates (fangates) are all the rage right now. To encourage people on facebook to become a fan you install a fan book on your fan page. The visitor must 'like' you to get past the fan gate and see the content underneath.

Fan gates can be a great way to grow your fan base but may in time prove frustrating for FB users. They can be used to hide offers, specials and fan only content. Once people 'like' you they then get access to the offer or information. The gate is a small 'barrier to click' and more people should find people don't hesitate to click like and progress to the content. 'Likes' are a cheap currency. It is easy to like because it is equally easy to unlike. If you are going to do fan gates on facebook consider offering something of value to reward the visitor, to ensure the transaction isn't bitter or annoying.

Wildfire have a free tool (which wont be free forever) which make adding a fan gate to your facebook page easy. It can be done in less than a few minutes.

You need to install their application call iFrames for Pages app but this is simple.

Why Google and Facebook own your new internet business

With the recent updates to facebook pages, by facebook, we are reminded that mega companies like facebook and google can do what they want, when they want. This update is far less dramatic that ones in the past but it is a small reminder that if facebook decides to rework a layout and do away with tabs in favour of left navigation, then it will.

More dramatic for developers is all the time some people spend learning FBML only to now be told that they will be phasing it out over time. Stupid idea to start your own markup language really, isn't it. There are open options for this kind of thing which is now apparent as iframes are supported instead.

The thing that is a little unnerving about all this is that after spending $xx on developing things for facebook a company may go under over night because facebook make a change that affects everyone without thought or consequence to anything other than their own agenda.

People developing for facebook you have been warned.

Love Music? Get your music tastes online with Facebook and Love Music

Love music is a new application on Facebook which (i have been involved in) which I am seeking people to test out. I like it as it is quick and displays my music taste quite aptly. Check it out, add it, play with it and feedback on the application page

The mistakes facebook is making...in my opinion...

I think facebook has been making some classic mistakes recently that will only see it go the way of myspace in relation to a mass migration to a new system platform long term.

1: Unregulated module submissions.
Surely we don't need 3 or 4 flickr plugins, 2-3 "where I have been" applications etc etc. They should have chosen the best of the crop for the site and kept it a little tidier.

2: Opening it up to Google - a mass appeal was the privacy and now it feels violated somewhat.
