If there is anyone out there conviced that they have set Zoneminder up right but still the link is red and there is no picture consider your web camera. I was using an old philips web cam which worked fine with Comarama(sp?) and the other one with X somewhere in the name...xtaw? But I couldnt get Zoneminder working. I went to Argos and spend 10 quid on the cheapest Logitech webcam they had and it worked out of the box (awful quality) but great to know that was the problem.

If you can borrow someones to test - do so.

For anyone struggling to find the basic commands to change the start up on your Ubuntu box to go to Desktop and not Terminal. Here it is...

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get install gdm
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Will take a while to install but worked for me a treat on Feisty Fawn 7.04
