It is only October but there is no doubt in my mind that there will be no other application that beats Spotify for me this year. Currently this is limited beta release and only in certain countries. If you want it in a nutshell it is iTunes for free (streaming not download) and what Last FM should have achieved all along.
General
It does require a small download for the app but this is an easy choice and almost makes the experience easier to enjoy separating app from web browser. It does insert audio and image ads but these are hardly noticed and past quickly without annoyance. The image ads I don't ever see as I leave it running in the background. The interface is a simply shades of grey but is slick.
Features
Taking it out for a quick walk here is my summarised feature list.
Select any album of any artist you know. (I have this thing where I ask the guys in the office to name any band. So far Spotify has not failed to deliver.)
You get that album and a full discography of all albums released by the artist.
You get a radio station which includes the artist you have listened to and others in a similar genre/popularity group. A bit like iTunes Genius (but free).
Result
This makes me feel 'Legal' again with no need to stray looking for artists to listen to whose albums I would rather not have to buy. If you are in the UK get an invite, do what you have to do... Do it!!
And...
I run this on Mac no problems. Spotify offer premium upgrades to remove ads.
Home interface with recommendations...

Artist page
You can see the option to scroll down to see all albums by artist and all other albums/complication the artist has been on.

Artist Bigraphy

Radio station with similar artists.

Can you blame it? Just joking. I am surprised. They say they are adding thousands of tracks daily so it shouldn't be long I would guess.

right - good pick up - thanks. That makes sense!
Ads
Is it just me, or do the ads go on forever? That's my biggest reason for not using it. It does look nice though, and the price is right.
ha! no, not forever Simon.
ha! no, not forever Simon. You can see there is a little visual clock that comes up when an ad starts which tells you how long the ad will run for. So you could mute until the clock runs through...
Great Post
I saw an invite for spotify on [link-removed] but i dunno if it's still availabe. Nice post :)
Spotify = great
Spotify is amazing and the rate it has spread only goes to reinforce that it is desperately what the music industry needs.
Unsigned artists can get their music on there free of charge as well, through [link-removed]
Have just put my first album on there, am very interested how it will fair in the way of profits.
Well done Spotify!!!
Wow thanks for this great
Wow thanks for this great review. I have never heard about Spotify before but I will definitely try it now! Music is my whole life so such applications are very interesting for me. The ability to look over full discography and history of music artists is a huge benefit of this app. Oh now I am not wondering why this app is the app of the year. Thanks one more time for this entry and I will be looking forward to other great ones from you. Sincerely, Bernard Thompson from iphone application development
