The coolest thing about the newest Handbrake offering is the ability to 'Queue' items.
This means instead of having to rip a whole DVD of a TV series, for example, you can rip it episode by episode. I am going to go the simple path so you don't have to fuss with the unnecessary features. I am interested in one thing - give me my DVD's on my iPod and good quality.
A friend recently gave me DVD of Jools Holland (Late night with Jools Holland) and it contained around 20 video songs on it. I only wanted the last two video clips on my iPod but had to rip the whole DVD as one movie. I can then take it into Final Cut Pro or iMovie and cut it up and re-export but I am rather busy as it is (or inherently lazy) when it comes to that stuff so that is not a great option.
Enter...the newest release of Handbrake (did I mention Handbrake is free....wow...make sure you donate). So how does it work...here it is:
Let's say for example you have Band of Brothers on DVD (or Desperate House wives etc etc). Each DVD of Band of Brothers has 2 episodes on in and you want to rip the DVD so you end up with two separate files. (Firstly rip the DVD with Mac the Ripper as per a previous post).
Opening Handbrake (after you have selected the DVD folder for ripping) and at the bottom click the Enable Queue tick box.
1: You will note at the top left there is the Title dropdown box. Select the Chapter you want. With a band of brothers DVD there are three. Two will be nearly an hour long and one will be about 3 minutes. So you can guess which ones are the episodes and which is the intro/advertising/guff. So Select the first long Chapter there.
2: Then select the kbps you want which I have started to do at 500 not 400 for a touch more quality.
3: Then name the file (top right) and select where you want it saved to. I named this one BOB Disk 1-1.mp4 ( for Band of Brothers, Disk1, Episode 1).
4: Select the Picture Setting button and reduce the width to 320. Leave the aspect ratio on in my opinion - it is small but original.
5: Click Add to Queue
This is the end of the first chapter being Queued. Now I will repeat the process although it is similar it is not entirely the same.
6: Return to the Title dropdown and select the next long chapter which can only be the second Episode.
7: Make sure the kbps quality is still 500 (should be)
8: Change the file name. I changed the second one to BOB Disk 1-2.mp4 (again Band of Brothers, Disk 1, Episode 2)
9: Click Picture Settings and reduce the width again to 320
10: Click on Add to Queue.
Your queue will now have two items queued. You can view your queue to make sure it all looks correct. If you are happy click RIP and off it will go. At the end you will have two files waiting for transporting to your iPod. Wohoo! OR Keep repeating the above steps if your DVD has more chapters you want.
Note for trigger happy punters. Don't forget when doing multiple chapters to click the Picture settings and resize the image. It is easily forgotten.
